On this page you’ll find some information about our registration process and the camp experience. If you have additional questions, please email us at info@camp-starlight.org.
Who’s eligible to attend camp:
Each camper or counselor in training (CIT) must be affected by the stigma against the LGBTQIA+ community or HIV/AIDS. For us, that means that the camper or CIT is HIV-positive, or someone in their household is HIV-positive. Or, the camper or CIT identifies as LGBTQIA+, or someone in their household identifies as LGBTQIA+.
Children who will be age 14 or younger on the first day of camp are eligible to be campers; those who will be 15 or older on the first day of camp are eligible to be CITs.
Camp is free to attend.
If you’re not sure about your child’s eligibility, email us at info@camp-starlight.org.
About the camp experience:
At Camp Starlight, we believe every member of our community deserves to feel seen, safe, and celebrated. To honor the diverse identities of our campers and volunteers, we use a gender‑liberated cabin structure.
Each cabin includes up to nine campers of a similar age and at least three adult counselors. Cabins are equipped with private hot showers, private toilets, and private changing areas. Across the rest of camp, you’ll find all‑gender facilities so that everyone — regardless of gender — can move through their camp experience with comfort and dignity.
Each day includes a full schedule of group activities and mealtimes, as well as periods for rest. In addition to swimming, arts and crafts, and rec, we also have theater, music, archery and rock-wall climbing. We are able to accommodate common dietary restrictions, and our on-site medical team administers all medications.
Our health and safety approach:
We strongly recommend the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters prior to attending Camp Starlight, but we will not be requiring them at this time. Policies and requirements are subject to change.
A person cannot come to camp if they have symptoms at check-in (fever, cough, sore throat, rash, congestion, vomiting and/or diarrhea), or if anyone in their household has been diagnosed with COVID in the past week (Sunday before camp or later).
On site, we may require masks in Club Med and will provide masks for campers and volunteers as needed. We will have rapid tests on hand at camp to test people who have symptoms. If a person has symptoms or tests positive for COVID, they must leave camp.
Getting to camp:
We don't want transportation to be a barrier for any child to come to Camp Starlight. Most children take a bus from Portland (provided by Camp Starlight, and staffed by our team) to the site. If it is a hardship for you to get to the Portland drop-off site, let our team know and we’ll discuss the options.
APPLICATION PROCESS
FOR CAMPERS AND CITs
Online registration form
We accept applications on a rolling basis. Click here to get started.
Health forms
There are two parts: (1) The parent/guardian fills out a questionnaire with the child’s health history, medications, and allergies; (2) The child’s provider fills out an evaluation and confirms they are able to participate in camp activities. In certain situations, a negative TB result is required.
Release forms
These are the legal forms that the parent/guardian must sign (electronically — you can do it on your phone or computer). These are sent in the weeks before camp.
Phone call (one per family)
We’ll set up a time to talk with you to make sure that camp is a good fit for your child (or children), and to learn more about how we can make sure they have the best possible camp experience this year.
FOR CAMPERS ONLY
Behavior agreement
Each child agrees to the camp behavior guidelines.
FOR CITs ONLY
Application, interview and training
If your child is eligible to be a CIT, the CIT program directors will contact you.
